Grilled Cheese tour of Des Moines

April is Grilled Cheese Month. This is huge. I love cheese. Perhaps the only thing better than Grilled Cheese Month would be Carbs & Cheese Month, because then I could include pasta and crackers.

This saturday is The Grilled Cheese Invitational in Los Angeles. Also this weekend, just down the road, is the Long Beach Comic Con where “The Guild” will be filming. Two totally worthwhile reasons to show your face in the sunny West Coast, covered in some comic-licious outfit made of cheese.

But if you are stuck in Felicia-Day-free Des Moines, you can still celebrate the godsend known as grilled cheese by visiting these places with delectable takes on that staple comfort food. Then go home and watch “The Big Bang Theory.”

La Mie (42nd St.) Grilled  Brie + Provolone

Gazali’s (25th St.) Grilled Cheese Wrap Cheese, onions, cucumber dip on the side, and whatever else I can’t remember.

Planet Sub (University Ave) Four Cheese cream cheese, swiss, mozzarella, american, sprouts, tomoatoes, salsa
Spicy Cheese cream cheese, pepper jack, mozzarella, onions, jalapenos, lettuce, tomatoes

Mars Cafe (University Ave) Moon Cheese blue cheese, mozzarella, provolone, dijon

Goodsons (Beaver Ave) It’s been a while since I had this beauty, but googling tells me that Parmigiano-reggiano, pecorino romano, mozzarella and white truffle oil are in this fantastic grilled panini.

Drake Diner (25th St.) Cheese Frenchie Jack and American cheese sandwich, deep fried. This sandwich almost killed me.

Star Bar (Ingersoll Ave) Grilled Vegetable & Goat Cheese Panino

Ritual Cafe (13th St.) Spicy Four Cheese Cheddar, pepper jack, provolone, Swiss with Serrano peppers
Tomato y Basil  f
resh basil, tomato, Italian spices with provolone
Grilled Veggies & Mozzarella Red peppers, red onion, tomatoes and fresh mozzarella, seasoned with balsamic vinegar.

All sandwiches are Kristina tested and tummy approved (with the possible exception of the Frenchie, because seriously that’s a lot to handle, even for me).

I updated and expanded my local grilled cheese listings in 2013
